Understanding insurance coverage for mental health services can be challenging. Access to mental health care benefits vary from company to company and are not typically handled in the same way that medical benefits are. Even if you believe you have coverage for mental health, it may not be easy to access.
For example, insurance companies frequently parcel out coverage for mental health services to third party gate-keepers, who oversee access to care. Some of the requirements necessary to access services may include: restrictions to certain providers or types of providers; restrictions as to the type of treatment covered; restrictions to the number of sessions available; higher co-pays than for medical benefits; and sometimes, oversight by other medical professionals, to name a few.
While the preferred way of collecting fees-for-service is for the individual to pay at the time of service and submit bills directly to their insurance company for reimbursement, we do contract with many companies and can bill them directly. When you schedule your first appointment, be prepared to assist us with being able to secure appropriate authorizations for services by having all of your insurance information in hand. For those people with access to EAP services, securing authorization and providing necessary information allows us to bill for those services directly.
Fees charged at Discovery Institute cover a 50-minute hour. The initial intake/evaluation fee is $115; subsequent sessions are $100. If we decide to meet for longer sessions the fee will be pro-rated on the hourly fee. Fees can be negotiated for individuals in challenging circumstances, and we do accommodate hardship situations to the best of our ability. Payment for services is due at the time services are rendered, unless arrangements have been approved in advance by our staff. We accept cash or check as payment for services.
